Delicious Polenta Fries and a Great Atmosphere on Vancouver’s Main Street

We’ve got Lisa to thank for this pick, and it is a great one!  Good spot for a date, great for hanging out with your friends.  The polenta fries are so delicious, but I wasn’t a big fan of the mayo dip.  The dip had a curry flavour, which was good, but something in me was craving a dip with a bit more acid to cut the richness of the creamy and crunchy fry.  Now maybe basic ketchup would have been a bit too normal for  this joint, but some kind of dip along that line would have worked better for me.  Now I’m not a calamari connoisseur that’s for sure…but I didn’t really like it all, it was really rubbery, which I’m told means it wasn’t fresh.  I’m giving Cascade a Very Good, and I’ll be going back again for sure.

Perogie Perfection

perogiesI went out for a bowling extravaganza with my team from work last night – woo hoo!  And we had dinner at Swiss Chalet…I have a deadly cold so I didn’t feel like eating much so ordered the perogies they were maybe just okay…but they reminded me that my perogie post is long overdue.  Perogies are yum yum in my book.  I love potatoes any way you can cook ‘em, but this is definately one of my favourite was to cook ‘em. I have many a great family memory of my Aunt Cathy and I making perogies together, her trying to reminder the recipe her mother made when she was little, and I think we’ve got it as close as we can for now.  Now these little morsels of goodness do take some effort, but a lot less than you might expect.  In true consultant form I’ve right sized the recipe, but if you want to make enough for six or eight people I’ve included those volumes as well.  The key to this recipe is the sour cream in the dough.  It makes the dough harder to work with, but it will be worth the effort.  I’m giving them a dish it again n again rating!

Kitsch and Comfort

Diner Deluxe
804 Edmonton Trail NE, Calgary
403.276.5499

Diner Deluxe brought to us by the owners and operators of Big Fish and Open Range is a lovely mix of comfort food with a bold splash of retro diner. From the music to the tables you’ll think you’ve stepped back in time. They serve an all day breakfast, which makes deciding at dinner very difficult, because on the other side of the menu you will be tempted by Macaroni and Cheese and Turkey with stuffing. The turkey was served on a sliced loaf of stuffing, which was a modern twist to this classic. The Mac and Cheese has a touch of pesto, which is one step too modern for me, but it is still quite good. I’d love to go back for breakfast, but the line up is so long I’ve got to go on a day when I’m not starving. I’m going to give Diner Deluxe a Very Okay (but it is very nearly a Very Good) and it probably has one of the best price points in cow town!
